October’s monthly book recommendation: The Obstacle is the Way by Ryan Holiday
This past month I read The Obstacle is the Way by Ryan Holiday… and I’m so glad I did! This book gives a whole new meaning to overcoming problems and how we feel about them. It is all about learning to accept things that happen which are outside of our control, and how to embrace them so that they can help us improve and become stronger.
The author includes a lot of ancient theologies (focusing on Stoicism) that are very applicable in today’s times and in each of our own lives. Wikipedia introduces Stoicism:
“Stoicism is a school of Hellenistic philosophy that flourished throughout the Roman and Greek world until the 3rd century AD. Stoicism is predominantly a philosophy of personal ethics which is informed by its system of logic and its views on the natural world. According to its teachings, as social beings, the path to happiness for humans is found in accepting this moment as it presents itself, by not allowing ourselves to be controlled by our desire for pleasure or our fear of pain, by using our minds to understand the world around us and to do our part in nature’s plan, and by working together and treating others in a fair and just manner.”
The study and practice of Stoicism is certainly something we can only benefit from… having very little to lose by doing so.
I 100% recommend reading Ryan Holiday’s book The Obstacle is the Way. You can get your copay here:
